From rainforest to cloudforest
Yesterday we got up at 6am, after arriving back home from the east about midnight, and went to Mindo, a two-hour drive north-west of Quito. There we sampled the delights of the cloudforest, where a high occurance of low-level clouds, resulting in fog drip, creates a wet, cool and very green terrain with an abundance of mosses, orchids and even hummingbirds. It was very beautiful, and a pleasant contrast to the rainforest we’d just come from.
We had a go at zip lining (orginally developed by scientists wanting to observe the forest from above, you travel horizontally from one peak to another across the canopy attached to cables) and abseiling down a waterfall. Zip lining was really fun; a thrill but not too strenuous. And despite a rock falling from above and cracking my led open while I was dangling over the cliff, the abseiling was a lot of fun too. Quite the adrenalin rush!
We had planned to do a lot more but an unfortunate downturn in relations with our tour guide meant that we abandoned the trip early, despite plans to stay the night in Mindo ‘Lindo’. After some tense negotiations we got back just over half of what we had originally paid for the tour and to cheer ourslves up we treated ourselves to a fancy meal at La Boca Del Lobo, with lots of wine and a very un-tense atmosphere. Today, we should have been tubing down the white-water river but instead we’re having a lovely morning on the roof terrace, with a leisurely breakfast in the sun, painting my toenails (Migs too) and reading up on Guatemala.
