Benvenido a Miami

Will Smith’s party tune, Welcome to Miami, became my personal anthem for our big American road trip.

I sang it silently in my head in the queue for the aeroplane, hummed it as we picked up the Mustang and sang out very loud as we drove along en a 2000 mile route towards Miami.  Will told us to: ‘Party in the city where the heat is on. All night on the beach ‘till the break of dawn’. And we took his advice!

He also sung of yachts, palm trees, cinnamon tans, 500 degrees in the Caribbean seas, and ladies half dressed and ‘fully equipped’! It certainly lived up to its reputation. It was truly a ‘salsa/merengue melting pot’ with ‘all ages and nations’ represented on the strip. Indeed, Miami boast a Little Havana and a Little Haiti. So we partied, right on the beach at the Nikki Beach Bar, outdoors at the Clevelander, and to live Latin beats at the Mango’s. I fell in love with Miami, well South Beach specifically, and I really didn’t want to leave.

The photo gallery and the word pairs below will give you a hint of the frisson of excitement I felt as we arrived, driving in over the huge flyovers, past sky scrapers and turning down Washington Drive to meet a traffic jam of convertibles all pumping out summer tunes, banging their heads to the beat and checking each other out on a hot Saturday afternoon. And it continued on all three days, in the grand hotels, on the Caribbean beach, in the sexy clubs.

Join me in singing … Welcome to Miami. Bienvenido a Miami!
