Double Standards of a Superpower – China Vs the US

Double Standards of a Superpower (April 2003)

China’s president Hu Jintao was on a four-day tour of America last week, which was hailed as the most important state visit from China in over 30 years. The Obama adminsitration planned to use this time to heal the rift which has developed between the two world powers, along side raising concerns about nuclear energy and currency protection and broaching the terrible human rights record of the Chinese government, highlighted by the protests outside the White House by supporters of the persecuted Falun Gong and a ‘Free Tibet’ for example.

So at this time I thought it apt to post an article I’ve just rediscovered which I wrote seven years ago (for the Nag Rag,  the magazine written by and for JET English teachers in Nagasaki) about the George W Bush and his govenrment’s record on human rights. The US government contiues to display an astonishing level of hypocrisy regarding its own and other nations’ human rights abuses and could start by ratifying the Second Optional Protocol to the UN International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights – the abolition of the death penalty.
